Hellen Keller is known around the world as a symbol of courage and hope in the face of overwhelming adversity. After the age of 19 months, she was afflicted with an illness that left her blind and death. As a result, she was referred to a twenty-year-old graduate from the Perkins Institution for the Blind in Boston, Anne Sullivan who remained with Keller until her death in 1936.
Anne’s success with Hellen remains an extraordinary and remarkable story as a miracle worker and their closeness allowed Hellen to thrive and become the most powerful and influential blind-death woman in US history with unwavering determination, astounding intelligence, unbelievable courage and insurmountable achievement. She dedicated her entire life helping people see the potential in their own lives. Despite her circumstances, Hellen taught us that life is a daring adventure and the only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision.
I will leave you with one of her quotes that shaped my perspective on my path as a seeker; “What you are looking for is not out there.. It’s in you.” Happy International Women’s Day in honour of Hellen and Anne, as their story kindle a light in the darkness and fills our hearts with inspiration.
Love and Gratitude.
